Insurance for Electricians

Comprehensive insurance solutions for electrical contractors. From domestic rewires to commercial installations, we arrange cover that protects your business against the unique risks of electrical work.

Important: Focus Insurance Services is an insurance broker, not an insurer. We arrange cover on your behalf from a panel of insurers. Policy terms, conditions, and exclusions apply.

Understanding Your Risks

Every trade has unique exposures. Here are the key risks we help electricians protect against.

1

Electrical Fire Risk

Faulty installations can cause fires, leading to significant property damage claims. Public liability cover is essential.

2

Electric Shock Injuries

Both you and third parties are at risk of electric shock. Employers' and public liability protect against injury claims.

3

Design & Specification Errors

Incorrect design or specification of electrical systems can lead to professional negligence claims.

4

Tool Theft from Vehicles

Electricians' vans are frequently targeted by thieves. Specialist tool cover protects your livelihood.

5

Damage to Existing Property

Accidental damage to customer property during installations – walls, floors, existing wiring.

6

Regulatory Non-Compliance

Work not meeting Building Regulations Part P can result in costly remedial work and claims.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need insurance to be NICEIC registered?
Yes, NICEIC and other competent person schemes require you to hold appropriate insurance, typically including public liability (minimum £2m) and professional indemnity cover. We can arrange policies that meet scheme requirements.
Does public liability cover electrical fires caused by my work?
Yes, public liability insurance covers your legal liability for property damage caused by your work, including fires resulting from faulty installations. This is one of the most important covers for electricians.
What's the difference between public liability and professional indemnity?
Public liability covers physical injury and property damage. Professional indemnity covers financial losses from professional negligence – for example, if your design doesn't meet the client's requirements or you give incorrect advice.
Are my tools covered while in my van overnight?
Standard van insurance often has limited tool cover. We can arrange specialist policies with higher tool limits and cover for tools left in vehicles overnight, subject to security requirements.
Do I need cover for solar panel and EV charger installations?
These are typically covered under standard electricians' policies, but you should declare this work as it may affect your premium or require specific cover extensions. MCS certification may be required for some renewable work.
